Soho Living Art Museum (SLAM) is the solution to a Live/Work environment, integrating artist housing and fine arts. SLAM bridges the division of the different levels of artists and blurs the line between an artistic friend to a professional, contemporary artist. It specifically caters to two users; the admirer and the artist. This design is located in Soho, New York, a wealthy, art hub. It is intended to be a program that an artist would invest in for three-five years to grow their clientele and begin networking which would jumpstart their career as an artist.
The showcases of the artwork of the residents and the professional contemporary artists are displayed on the exterior of the building drawing in the admirers. This leads them into the museum space which is dedicated to professional, contemporary artists. The circulation would then lead to the adjacent gallery spaces which are rented by the residents, blurring that line once again. If the admirer truly enjoyed the artwork they could proceed from the gallery space to the elevator up to the studio spaces (as shown in the section perspective and floor plans). This then allows a relationship to begin to form between the artist and the admirer.
SLAM allows for discovery and inspiration, specifically for the artists. As they enter in their day-to-day life to proceed to their room, they pass by over 150 display cases, between the museum and gallery space, and then past several more display cases. This allows for inspiration of the artist in the convenience of their typical, daily circulation. It also allows for efficiency and ease between their home and the studio spaces, while still maintaining that privacy as the display cases act as dividers between those spaces. SLAM optimizes the opportunity for an admirer to dig deeper into the artwork and the artist behind it while also granting the experience of an artist to be inspired and discovered.
