DESIGN AND BUILD

This project was assigned to encourage us to understand not just how to design but how to build. This was a partner project to design a bench with a purposeful concept and build it by hand. Our concept explored the procession of feeling to seeing dialogues between two separate experiences, emphasized through dissymmetry. Typically occupied benches immediately convert to unwelcoming. This bench proposed a solution to this issue, while also creating community. As one approaches the bench, it is unclear if someone resides on the other side due to the curve of the planks. This eliminates the awkward encounter of avoiding preoccupied spaces. As the user sits, they may discover another person on the other side. The planks provide a privacy and boundary of space while also creating intimacy and interaction between the users.
